Emergency Dental Care
Sometimes, your dental health needs go beyond routine care and maintenance. For instance, if you experience a dental emergency, such as a damaged or knocked-out tooth, then the health and longevity of your smile could depend on prompt, emergency dental treatment. Depending on the nature of your emergency, waiting too long could result in more severe damage to your tooth, a higher risk of infection in your oral tissues, and much more.
What to Do in an Emergency
- Your first step in a dental emergency should be to stem any bleeding, if present. Also, collect any pieces of your tooth that have broken off (or the tooth itself, if it’s knocked out) and rinse them off carefully.
- Next, call our office immediately to explain your emergency and schedule a visit as soon as possible. The quicker you receive treatment for your emergency, the greater chance you have at minimizing any damage to your teeth and/or oral tissues.
- To alleviate any pain and/or swelling, place an ice pack on the side of your mouth where the emergency occurred. You can also take an over-the-counter pain reliever for temporary relief and avoid biting or chewing on that side of your mouth.
